Honouring the Memory of Pte Robert “Robbie” Foster

Supporting Ride the Wall.

At Risk Management Security Services, we believe it is important to remember and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. This year, we are proud to support Ride the Wall, a moving tribute that helps keep alive the memory of fallen soldiers and provides vital support to their families.

We dedicate our support in memory of Private Robert Foster, known as Robbie, of the 1st Battalion (The Royal Anglians – “The Vikings”).
Robbie made the decision to join the British Army at just 17 years old, surprising his family with his determination to serve. He completed his training in Catterick, North Yorkshire, and despite his age, he felt a strong duty to deploy alongside his regiment to Afghanistan. As Robbie said to his father, “I am a fully trained soldier, I need to go with my mates.”

During his tour, Robbie’s spirit shone brightly. His humour, optimism, and ability to lift morale made him a valued friend and comrade. Even in the toughest conditions on the front line, he found ways to keep those around him going. After returning home for R&R, Robbie spoke of the harsh realities of the conflict, but his loyalty to his fellow soldiers meant he was determined to return and stand with them.

On the 23rd of August 2007, Robbie gave his life in Afghanistan. He was just 18 years old. His family, friends, and regiment remember him as someone whose glass was always half full, whose laughter filled every room, and whose bravery and loyalty defined his short but meaningful life.

We were honoured to hear Robbie’s story from our good friend John Foster, his father. It is with deep respect and gratitude that we make our donation in Robbie’s memory. In addition, our colleague Louise Wilson will proudly be riding to the wall on 4 October as part of this year’s tribute.

Robbie’s sacrifice — and that of so many others — reminds us that freedom is never free. Through Ride the Wall, we hope to ensure that Robbie and all who gave their lives in service will never be forgotten.

All gave some. Some gave all.

Security officer of the quarter for Q1 of 2024

Security officer of the quarter for Q1 2024 is Michael Mrzyglod

Security Officer of the Quarter for Q1 2024 is Michael Mrzyglod for dealing with a profoundly serious first aid incident.

Michael works at a large storage facility in Oxfordshire and on the day in question a visitor to the site was moving a heavy cabinet from a vehicle when it fell causing a major break to her leg. Her husband was also with her and quickly went into a state of panic and shock. Michael became aware of the incident and quickly made his way to the stricken couple to help and impose a level of calm that was required to avoid further injury or distress. Using his wealth of knowledge, training and by adopting a composed approach to the situation, he was able to reassure them and deliver first aid whilst the emergency services arrived. The arrival of both Ambulance and Air Ambulance took two hours and during this period Michael remained with the couple, despite his shift having finished, and ensure they were cared for until medical help arrived.

It is clear from Michael’s actions that he prevented further harm and distress by controlling the situation from the outset and by ensuring his approach was appropriate and effective.
Outstanding work Michael!

The best audit for Q1 of 2024 award

The best audit for Q1 2024 went to Olubunmi Alebiosu

We undertake penetration tests across all our sites which also incorporate an assessment of the Security Officer on duty. The best audit for Q1 2024 went to Olubunmi Alebiosu (Olu) who works for us at an Aerospace Company Head Office in Bicester.

Olu was confronted by a person posing as a British Gas engineer who had been called by the company to fix an emergency issue. Undaunted by the pressure applied by the person, Olu refused him access to the building and made the appropriate checks to see if he had legitimate reason to be on site.

It was established by Olu that he was indeed attempting to gain unauthorised access and Olu’s action prevented this. The auditor then undertook an assessment of Olu covering the following areas:
– Alertness
– Attitude
– Dress/Presentation
– Understanding of Duties
– On-Site Training
– SIA Licence
Olu scored 100% and combined with his actions to prevent unauthorised access was the worthy winner this quarter. Great work!!

Our Security Officer of the Quarter Award

Our Security Officer of the Quarter Award goes to Bruce Washington who recently had to deal with an extremely difficult and challenging situation.

On the day in question, Bruce was working at Westcott Venture Park, where he has been employed by us for over ten years and provides outstanding work for us and to our customer. During this shift, a male arrived at the barrier and claimed to have just murdered his family and had travelled from Luton to visit King Charles. Clearly this was not a situation that occurs daily on the park and one that needed quick thinking and a calm approach to avoid escalation.

Bruce managed to get the man to park his car and engage with him through the locked gatehouse where it became clear, very quickly, that he was suffering a mental health episode. His behaviour was erratic and Bruce ensured that calmness was maintained and no other people were put at risk. Whilst dealing with this, Bruce was able to alert the management team of Risk Management Security and Mick Stubbs and Aaron Pickering attended site immediately to provide support to both Bruce and our customer Lisa Himpson.

After several hours of talking and sensitivity, the emergency services arrived and the gentleman was able to receive professional help.

A big thank you to Bruce for his incredible work!!

Steve Allmond is the winner of the latest Security Officer award

We are delighted to announce Steve Allmond as the winner of the latest Security Officer award.

We are delighted to announce Steve Allmond as the winner of the latest Security Officer award. For the period July to September 2022 Steve was nominated for this award due to his sterling and successful efforts in dealing with intruders actively engaged in criminal activity.

Whilst on duty at a large business park in Oxfordshire Steve was made aware of activity through a sound he heard at 05:50 one morning. It would have been easy for Steve to dismiss this as simply any other sound, just as many of us hear various noises throughout the course of our working days, but Steve chose to treat this as suspicious and directed one of our Patrol & Response Officers to the property. The two criminals quickly became aware of our security presence and chose to abort their activities and made their escape before any significant crime took place.

This is an excellent example of commercial security proving effective in the face of crime without having to physically intervene or risk injury to themselves. The swift and decisive action taken be Steve thwarted a burglary and for this, we thank him!!

Aaron Pickering presented Matt with a glass award for his outstanding work

Matt scored 100% and the terms used to describe him were alert, polite, efficient and someone who displays a very positive attitude

We regularly assess our Security Officers through penetration tests undertaken by an independent company to evaluate what actions they take when confronted with an unauthorised person attempting to gain access. Each quarter we review all tests and decide on the best audit for that period and without doubt, the most recent award went to Matt Kelsall for his work at Mitsubishi Electric Europe BV.

Matt is an experienced security professional with extensive knowledge of the site where he works as Team Leader, and in June was faced with a person claiming to be the new HR Director of Risk Management Security Services who required access to the premises. The person presented two forms of ID, both of which were fake, and applied pressure to allow him access to the site, however, as Matt didn’t recognise him and was not satisfied that the methods of ID were genuine, entry was refused. After further pressure and attempts to persuade access to be provided, it was clear that Matt was not going to back down and the auditor disclosed his true identity. He was then granted access to the site for the other element of the audit, the inspection. During this inspection the Security Operative is assessed and scored under various categories such as appearance, knowledge of the site, training, attitude and awareness. Matt scored 100% and the terms used to describe him were alert, polite, efficient and someone who displays a very positive attitude.

Aaron Pickering presented Matt with a glass award for his outstanding work. Well done Matt!!!

Insight: How does Keyholding and Alarm Response Work?

There are two main elements to keyholding and alarm response. The first is the ‘keyholding’ element. This is physically holding keys to enable someone access and to give the ability to respond to an event if it occurs. This is where Risk Management Security Services comes in and we can hold your keys in a secure manner, only available to authorised personnel, to enable us to attend without disturbance no matter what time of the day it is.

The second element is the alarm response aspect. This is concerned with attending a location, on your behalf, when we receive an alarm signal/call. The purpose being that we can then deal with any situations, problems and events as they occur.

Who is involved?

When you choose to have a monitored alarm, there are several different companies involved who all do very different jobs. This can often be a confusing matter if not explained properly. Therefore, in its simplest form the usual involved parties are:

  1. The System Company – they will install and maintain the alarm
  2. The Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) – this is the company who receive alarm activations
  3. The Keyholder/Security Company – this is the company who respond to the alarm

Further information on the specific roles and responsibilities of these various groups can be found below to help give you a better understanding of who does what and when.

1. The System Company

This company will employ qualified engineers and will be the ones to install your intruder or fire alarm system. They are also the people who will maintain the system, usually conducting an annual or bi-annual service, conducting routine maintenance and fixing alarm problems.

Once the system is installed the installation company will appoint their approved Alarm Receiving Centre to monitor the alarm and act should it activate.  It is often misunderstood that the alarm company are the monitoring station as well, when in most cases the monitoring is placed with a third party.  Some large system companies do have their own monitoring stations.

Common monitoring stations that provide services for installation companies are:

  • Southern Monitoring
  • EMCS
  • AIM Monitoring
  • Custodian

2. The Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC)

Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC’s) are also often referred to as just the ‘Monitoring Station’ or sometimes the ‘Central Station’.

The role of the ARC is simply to accept the alarm and escalate it in accordance with their instructions. The specific instructions will vary from system to system depending on what has been agreed with your systems company but usually this is a call the Keyholder/Security Company and/or the Emergency Services.

Alarm monitoring is quick and detailed communication between your system and the ARC and advises them of an ‘event’ on the system i.e. an alarm, a fault or a failure of some description.

3. The Keyholder/Security Company (Risk Management Security Services)

Upon receipt of an activation the ARC will telephone the Keyholder providing the property details and what type of activation has occurred, this could be either a single/unconfirmed or a sequential/confirmed activation.

A single activation is where only one detector device has been triggered.  The Police will not attend single activations.

A sequential activation is where multiple detectors have been triggered within 30 minutes of each other and the Police will attend these alarms if you have paid for such a response through your system installer.

Upon receipt of a single or sequential alarm activation being received Risk Management Security will dispatch a fully trained and SIA Licensed Security Officer to attend the premises and follow specific instructions that have been agreed and documented with our customer.
